I'm having a little problem with ocassionally starting my car. Most of the times it will start/turn over. But on ocassion when I turn the ignition key there is absolutely nothing, I have warning lights but its like no juice to the starter. I can turn the key off and then back on and its starts sometimes I have to turn off and turn on a couple of times. FYI my battery is new. Any suggestions to look at?

What are the symptoms of a bad starter?

Can be similar to a bad switch; although there are times when a wonky switch will permit the starter to engage the flywheel and turn the engine over - but not allow it to run.

Just like any electrical device that moves, corrosion, dirty or loose contacts (and carbon brushes). and wear can result in intermittent operation. This includes both the starter motor and the solenoid. Both devices can eventually suffer from a broken winding or mechanical problems like worn bearing or worn bendix drive. It is possible to jump the starter and bypass the ignition switch or of course, to remove the starter from the car and test for current draw and output.


Sometimes the fix is easy. Knowing what to fix is the hard part.

Look for and locate the 3-plug wiring connector that connects the thin wires to/from the starter. It's behind the brake booster. Disconnect it and clean the connectors as best you can. Have a beer.

Had the same problem with my '74...rebuilt the starter/solenoid before I figured out it was a dirty/corroded connector. Good luck.
 
I had a similar issue a couple of months ago, and if a "tick" sound can be heard when turning the key then this might be the reason:
The problem was with the starter. When you take the complete starter off the engine block and would test it on a work bench, then you will find no problems. However when reinstalled on the engine, the problem arises again. This is due to the compression of the engine and the lack of power from the starter to crank it into life. The source of this problem were the carbon brushes due to wear...
Installed a reserve one I had and the problem was solved.
FYI: Accesibilty was not the best ...

Rule 1. Before major disassembly, always check the simple stuff first.
Rule 2. Problems likely originate with whatever we last messed with.

Thse sound so logical, but any (and probably all) of us have been caught violating these simple rules.

Suggest your first verify tight connections at the back of the ignition switch, and that the black wire from the switch is adequately connected to the starter solenoid. Either could cause the symptoms you describe.
 
Yeah, i always get caught by the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) but I have fun tearing things apart anyway!

Wim: where did you get new brushes?
