Starting problems

When the car is cold it starts right up with 2-3 cranks of the engine; no problems there. When I shut if off after it is nice and warmed up, like running in to buy a six pack, it is hard to start. It hardly turns ovner like the battery is dead. It will turn over a few times very slowly but not enough to start. If I throw some jumper cables on it will fire right up. Also, if I let it cool down for about a 1/2 hour it will start no problem... I have a 3.5 with Motronic 1.3 and moved the battery to the trunk. Any ideas are appreciated!

okay so you need to know the manner in which a battery goes kaput.

Due to the chemistry, a battery will almost always put out near to rated voltage. However, it will not put out the amps (at least not for very long). This is referred to as "surface charge".

The battery will appear healthy and start the car on first crank or very soon thereafter, but any repeated attempts when the engine is other than immediately ready to start, will fail. This is a classic sign of a battery near, or at, the end of its useable life.

Others may put it more eloquently, but them's the facts as I know them, short version.

I must have bought a bad battery then because this one is less than a year old, but that makes the most sense. One guy tried to tell me the wire to the starter was too small of gage but I never changed it and never had the problem before the swap. I could see the 3.5 needing a few more cranking amps over the 2.8 but not much. Thanks for your suggestion.

Take a hammer with you on your next drive- if it cranks slow then smack it.
Sounds like typical heat soaked starter going out.
