I have a 1972 coupe, when you turn the steering wheel there is a knocking sound in the steering shaft. If the frontend end is jacked up and the weight removed from the front wheels there's no noise when the steering wheel is rotated. There are two universal joints one at the steering box and one just below the steering wheel. Has anyone had this problem and if so what did you find causing this noise?

Thanks, Doug

I had a similar steering interference under acceleration in my RHD E9.

It turned out to be the bolt on the steering uni hitting the exhaust on acceleration. I had to back off to allow steering to return.

My solution was new engine mounts.

Cheers,

Rod
