I like and have the wood Nardi, with black spokes. Needs adaptor hub and a replacement horn button should come with it. Others prefer the chromed spokes; some like M car wheels, or later '80s wheels.

However, my turn canceling has not worked correctly since the Nardi install. I've tried to tweak it without success, now I just live with it.

Also, the spokes can be hard on your fingers. You'll learn only to grab the circumference.

Downside of wood wheels is that in a severe crash they may splinter and, um, spear you.

I've used various steering wheels on the two coupes I've owned. These includes the original 400mm bus steering wheel, a Nardi moghogany 360mm wheel, a 4 spoke wheel from a 79 633 CSi, a Momo 350mm drilled 3 spoke Prototipo wheel, a 380mm 4 spoke Alpina wheel and finally a 380mm Petri CSL wheel. My personal favorites are the latter two that is listed above with the original CSL drilled 3 spoke sport steering wheel being my #1 but get ready to pay an arm and a leg to get a good used one, if you are lucky enough to find a excellent used one, at the current market value, about $750. The only other wheel I would even consider is the British 3 spoke Motolitas. Ideal wheel size wheel for the CS is 380mm, approximately 15 inches. Currently, the CSL Petri wheel is mounted on my coupe.

Hello,
I have a 15" black leather on black 3 spoke MOMO and I love it. My coupe came with a smaller (14"?) wood and chrome unit and it seemed too small for the car. Also, the wood hoop's color was a different tone (more blonde) from the the rest of the car's wood. Smaller wheels just look 'small' in the E9 cockpit, but just fine in a '02. Its ust a scale/aesthetic issue personnally, ultimately a pilot/owner prefernce.

Depending on what your going for, appearance or function, a dressy/formal or more athletic look, should influence your choice. Wood wheels are beautiful & elegant, leather wraps offer more grip/support for sporting situations. If creating a show car, either the Petri CSL wheels (chrome spokes) or a 3 or 4 spoke MOMO/Alpina (black spokes) are a good aftermarket/period, sport choice. Lovely Nardi's will definitely dress/polish things up. Again its pilot preference. If the car ever sees the track, a leather wrap is the way to go.

No affiliation but, there is a german Ebay seller (Krull??) that has some great wheels from time to time. I got mine from him and it was a smooth deal.

HTH and good luck

Here are a few pics of my 380mm CSL steering wheel mounted on my 72 CSi.

Steering Wheels

I have the same wheel as the one shown in Bert's pictures. It is much better that the plastic, rubberised 4 spoke "bus" thing that it replaced.

I think the 3 spoke wheels were available in various sizes, including 360mm and 380mm diameter. Perhaps the 360mm one was originally designed for a 2002 (?) and the 380mm originally for CSL's? The real experts in here can possibly advise.

I got mine from german ebay. www.ebay.de Search using either Lenkrad BMW e9, Lenkrad BMW CS, Sportlenkrad BMW, etc. Price was reasonable. Delivery to UK was about one week. If I can find the sellers username, it can be passed on.

The steering wheel can ( in my opinion ) be changed to whatever pleases the driver. Keep the original one and you can always swap them about.

Do the concourse guys keep a "driving" wheel and a "show" wheel?

Dave, you are correct about the steering wheel sizes for the 2002's and the CSL's. The 380mm leather and the 400 mm rubberized wheels were factory options for the CS coupes.

The Petri CSL wheel was much discussed in an earlier thread. Go to page 2 and scroll down to 'CSL steering wheel question', it contains some interesting facts and some misnomers on this particular wheel and its applications.

Am I correct in my assumption that the availabilities of the CSL steering wheel is much greater Europe than here in the United States? What is the current market value on a good to excellent used example? Here in the US, it is roughly about $750.

Thanks
Albert
