Writing this from the managers office at SFO short-term parking so will be brief.

My car was taken between the Sept 13th and today from its spot. I am about to file the police report, and actually took a photo of the location prior to locking and leaving the car. So for once its not just being forgetful.

If anyone hears of a polaris silver blue leather1973 3.0 CS being offered around in Bay Area or elsewhere please let me know. Nardi wheel and modern stereo. The coupe is listed in the registry and has the vin 2240689.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Matt.

Sorry to hear that. I think there are some active members on the hunt for cars and parts on the internet, so If you have any info on distinguishing features, etc, lets us know.

Update...great news thieves can't drive stick! Car abandoned in different location near the exit. Gonna go buy a lottery ticket now! What a relief.

Bastards

Yeah,
Kinda figured they wouldn't get far. Unless a "gone in sixty seconds" deal and a pre-order stuffed in a container...the coupe is sort of hard to divest.
Hope they did not do too much damage and I am sure you are relieved.

What part of SFO were you parked in? I don't leave my coupe there, but I do leave my daily driver in overnight parking (right at the terminal) when I fly for a few days for work. I thought that part of the airport was pretty well patrolled but if you had a problem I'd love to know about it.

Car theft

I have never had a car stolen and I think it is because I only have manual trannies. Now it may also be because many of my cars were POS. There are basically 3 types of car thieves (at least in Baltimore). 1) The 13 year old who wants to joy ride - he can't impress his friends doing donuts with a stick shift. 2) The Honda or Toyota destined for the chop shop for a rear quarter panel or what have you. 3) The high end Porsche or Ferrari to be immediately put in an container and on a boat to Brazil or Russia (not many of these in Bmore).

Hope the car was in good condition. My e9 also has a fuel shut off switch - mainly as a safety device for the three side draft 45 Webers in case of fire, but it also makes the car impossible to start (unless you know where the switch is).

I am thinking, maybe some others also. Why would you leave your Coupe for even 1 night. Mine is a project and i don't take my eyes off of it. Let alone leave it for someone to even take the wheels...
Never

Just my thoughts

B

congratulations
happy to hear that happy end
+1 on the comment about dont leaving the car alone so much time
i do not consider it worth to be stolen, it is not a drifterM30, nor an exclusive 507, but mind the damage to have the roundels taken off the c-pillar and my nightmares came

Does the registry have a "Stolen" category?
Maybe we can hook up directly with the California Amber Alert system.

How can you dispose of a stolen E9? There are VIN hounds that peek at every coupe they see and report to this board. Only outlet would be that shop in Australia that hides VINs citing the privacy of their distinguished clientele.

more than likely they would cut out and transplant the vin # from a dead + buried car ... most likely that they could title to. that happened to a friend of mine years ago w/ a 2002 he bought and was subsequently stolen. the louisiana state police called him a few years later and sent him pix of a totaled / rusted car - that had most of the vin numbers removed except for one on the frame. the car he had bought had a sunroof ... the one in the grave did not.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the notes and concerns. The car was not damaged apart from some minor things that are not worth an insurance claim...they seemed to take care of the car which I suppose is unsurprising if their end goal was to resell it.

It certainly was a very stressful 3+ hours after a long and delayed flight, and I am glad I was able to drive home (eventually).

As for why I left the car there, well it IS a car, and regardless of how much we love cars, they are to be driven and enjoyed IMHO. I understand and respect those who feel differently but this will not change my opinion in the slightest about using any car as often as I'd like to. I would hate one day to find myself to unable to drive and regret that I didn't spend more time enjoying that feeling we all love so much.

On a positive note, does anyone have GPS locators in their cars, or "lo-jack" systems? If so, I would love to hear recommendations!

Glad you got it back - how did they hotwire it? I also have an ignition kill switch and engage it whenever it's parked somewhere other than my garage.

I am not very technical (understatement) so don't know how they did it, there were a bunch of wires sticking out.

The kill switch sounds like a great idea...is is simple to have installed?

I had a hidden solenoid that blocked the fuel line on my Corvair. It was hooked up to the light dimmer. If you forgot to open the circuit and ran out of gas, you were screwed, because while turning the car over, it didn't leave enough amps to open the solenoid valve. Caught me a few times. You would then have to run a direct line to it. WHy I thought people were after my Corvair I do not know, but that is what comes when you obsess about your vehicle and think it is the "One" I have had two of my last three Corrados stolen. It drives you nuts. The last one I had was equipped with tracking, but it got hit. The thought of some foreign Crook putting an E9 on his want list has me now thinking the E9 is worthy of counter measures.

Yes, one way is to put a switch between the coil and the ignition and install in the cabin somewhere. A trusted mechanic could do it easilly for you.
