Heya, everybody.

As some of you know, I'm pretty young, and I'll be going back to grad school soon. Currently, my coupe is residing in my folk's garage, causing much consternation and aggravation for all involved.

4 people + 6 vehicles + 3 garage spots = somebody is not happy.

So, to alleviate this, I'd like to move the coupe somewhere for long-term storage. The body is nice and stable, so it isn't like it will rust out from under me. (if it does, my body guy and I are going to have a long talk) I've been looking at various storage places, they seem to charge ~150-200$ per month. To me, that seems like throwing money away. I was thinking of buying a small plot of land in the boonies, building a small building, and keeping the coupe there.

Trouble is, being out in the boonies, I'd be worried about something happeneing to my coupe. So, I'd probably build some crazy hardened structure to shelter the car. Hook up a webcam to let me check it periodically, some power to keep the temp pretty stable, a few other amenities. The total cost to do this would likely be in the 10k range.

Since most of you are more experienced with finances and life in genral, I'd like to hear your opinions as to the better choice in this instance: build a shed, or put it in a self-storage place?

Land is generally a good investment. Coming from the same neck of the woods (Tennessee), and making the trek to GA Tech often while in school, I would worry about keeping my coupe alone "in the boonies." Isn't this the same area where they filmed Deliverance? If you do make such an investment, I would suggest trying to find Darrel and his other brother Darrel and hiring them keep an eye on it for you. You should be able to pay them $20 & a bottle of Jack Daniels each month and rest assured that anyone who has any untoward intentions on your car would wind up with a backside full of rock salt. You also gain a couple of fun luvin' friends!

Seriously, I suspect that if you search around you can find someone with a large warehouse or a barn who would cut you a deal for a small corner. I know that there are lots of car collectors (not BMWs though) who could and would probably help. It might also be worth checking around the neighborhood. I have a friend who stores his mustang in a garage owned by a little old lady. He pays about $50/month. She's happy to have some money and she also likes having him show up from time to time to check on her.

If there is a small municipal/private airport near to you I would suggest canvassing the hanger operator/owners if they will store your car. Check everything between home and school.

I bet half of the hangers at our local airport keep an assortment of cars, boats and occasionally planes in them. The guy with the hanger next to ours has an amazing collection of cars (and one plane) in his and he's probably pretty typical. One guy has 40 or so that range from the last Ford GT 40 made to the car used to model Pixar's little blue talking auto (can't remember the movie) with a F40 and an Lambo Espada thrown in for grins.

Agree with other that it's best to store in a "frequented "area. However don't forget to insure it while it's being stored.

Other than that depending on the climate and if it's stored alone think about running a dehumidifier while it's stored, plus "moth balling" it properly

Storing your Coupe

Add to your list--mouse and rodent protection as those critters love wires and places to nest.

Why not just invest in a four post lift and keep your car in your parents garage. Less than 2K.

Low garage ceiling, and already have a scissor lift.

No worries, I would go through all the storage steps. (changing oil, adding spray oil for the combustion chambers, full tank + stabilizer, change coolant, change brake fluid, overpressurizing the tires, the works)
