stowage compartment release

The release button on the stowage compartment lid of my 1970 2800cs is broken and I am forced to use duct tape to keep lid closed.. Anybody repaired the mechanism or have an acceptable replacement? This is the compartment to the left of the steering wheel.

Have you looked at the metal "box" that the hook on the back of the release button catches into? If that is misaligned, the hook won't catch and the lid will not stay closed. There are a couple of screws that hold the metal "box" in place; the top of the box is slotted allowing for some adjustment.

As to the button itself, its very simple. Does the hook move backward about 25 degrees when you push it in, and return to a relatively straight position when you release the button? If so, this is operating correctly.

Yes it’s the button that’s broken. The spring that pops the hook back in place is defunct.
