strange behavior

my car, which i drive almost daily, has run flawlessly for several months. then yesterday it did something strange: after sitting for a couple hours, it started fine but idled very roughly - and when given any gas, it missed, coughed, and almost stalled - in short, not driveable. i then noticed a clicking/arching sound coming from my ecu (motronic 1.3, bosch xx179 with miller war chip) that corresponded with the cutting out/stalling of the motor - it was as if the motor was momentarily shut down corresponding to the 'click' coming from the ecu. and the click was pretty loud as i heard it over the running motor and ecu inside the closed glove box. i shut it all down, then after restart all ran normally.
any ideas??

Check the coil wires to see if something's loose.

Ignition switch- did the warning lights come on? or everything went dark?

Check the main realy for the same.

Check the ecu wires, same.

If you need the ecu wiring diagram, let me know.

Go back over all the grounds.... you do have a seperate ground to the block near the front? Not the one at the firewall.. Bosh is freaky about grounds.
