strange clicking sound by the fuse door? help needed..

on a 1972 bmw e9 cs carburated(zenith) auto car... I ear clicking relay sounds when engine is under load going up freeway onramp...?? what could cause that???. The carbs are newly rebuilt and were finally properly adjusted..The car drives well and the trans shifts as it should
..However today i eared this multiple clicking noise when the engine is under load when pressing accelerator fully to go up my nearest freeway onramp..
Has anyone experienced this on an automatic???
 
What octane gas are you running? Checked timing lately?
 
Are you sure it is a relay clicking? I used to have a clicking with a minuscule hesitation phenomenon with the clicking sound coming from the left side presumably. I thought it was electrical but my carb guru told me the technical term was actually carburetor farts, and caused by lean mixture. Solution: a loud radio when the passenger is a new date.
 
this is not a timing issue.. one of the relays under the dash(near fuse box) is making a clicking noise as if going on and off...very strange to me..
 
Likely not related to the fact that your car is an automatic. The kick down is mechanical.

Another thought would be the speed relays and/or solenoids under the hood. Note sure where these are grounded - I don't have these - but I think they have a common ground and would operate under the conditions you describe. You should find and check the ground on these.
 
Thanks for the suggestion i will check the ground on the speed relays.. can you point where they are located?
 
The speed relay/controller is under the coil and the dashpots are just switches on the firewall to control vacuum, probably not an issue. If you look in our FAQ on Relays you will see pics of which one is which. With a 72 there are no window load shed relays so you only have Wiper and main Load shed.
