okay guys, i know this has been discussed before ... but here goes again to see if i can learn something for the FAQ that i am writing for e9 color placement.

there are reports of original struts / subframes being either a green gray or black. I have previously heard from well respected people that both were used. so my question is to try to figure out if there were any rules.

so what i would like to hear from people is
1. what year is your coupe?
2. what color are your struts / subframes?

the last question is, does anybody have a RAL color for the green / gray color?

I like this color

It’s the color you see when you separate the subframe from the frame rail.
and the color inside the airbox and the color under the intake hose on the outside of the airbox on the csi and Csl.

i agree with Chris ... it looks perfect. unfortunately i do not have an original air filter housing or a CSi airbox ... and the later style airbox i have is black. would love to paint my airbox the right color ... and the subframes are a bit large to take to get color matched. would really like to know the color makeup that you are using.

Don, that is obviously gorgeous - well done.
so far we have heard from several people with black - from 1970 to 1973 ... nothing from anybody in '74.

My December built 1973 CSI, often referred to as phase 2, RHD has black struts and subframe.

I found this from NewSixCoupe on Air Cleaners:
I'm looking at an actual RAL 7021 chip (you can't judge color on a monitor) and there's no way that's the right color—its charcoal gray, almost black. I think the number may have been accidentally transposed, because 7012 is a dark gray/green that matches the BMW Museum images above almost perfectly. Its also the color of the air cleaner on my '74. Here's a pic from my trip and you can see how lighting throws things off because here the color has a bluish tint.

This from deQuincey:
@Stevehose yes you are right, there were at least 2 different greys, one dark green grey and the other light grey and i even wonder if there is not a third one as a sort of olive green as to ral, i recall discussing with a shop about 7021 and 7043, for the greendark version, but i have to check nonetheless i give little trust to bmw official response, not sure if they are aware of what happened in "Chez Karmann" back in the seventies,...;-)

This from dbower:
Hello Mr. Bower,

thank you for your inquiry.
The Paintcode of the Aircleaner is RAL 7021

Note that Mr. Karmann is responding specifically to my vehicle so I don't know if the color changed before or after this. For reference, here is the RAL chart, showing clearly that RAL 7021 is a dark gray:

As an aside, this confirms what Lothar Schuettler told me recently. I remain mystified why so many (including mine) are light gray.
Don

and this from HB Chris:
That is black grey, next to 7022 which is what we used for the b35 air box, it looks black. Get a sample and double check. Even 7012, 7015 and 7031 have more blue and also could be correct.

i know the color in pictures are off ... but i look at this picture of a very original ceylon car and the air cleaner looks more gray than green. its also evident that things are darker in reality than they are (lighting wise) - look at the color of the ceylon.

Gray on the outside is typical and means nothing.
Look inside for the true color

very valid point. on my old carb'd bavaria + 2002 i always thought there was oil blowback from the worn engine for the different color
