I was driving down by the beach last weekend when the tranny got stuck in second. I have the Getrag 260 5 speed. I could hear a tink tink tink which didn't make sense to me. I parked the car and was going to have it towed back home but then i was able to get it out of second by pulling up on the stick real hard and managed to drive home by shifting this way. I still hear the tink tink. Any ideas? I think it might the slector shaft has sliped out on3 of the ends or maybe one of the shifting rods is loose.

When's the last time the shift linkage and bushings were inspected/replaced?
Could be a slave cylinder hose leak, or air in the hydraulic system.

Slave cylinder is almost new, less than 1000 miles and no air in the lines; car rolls when clutch is pushed in so I don't think it's a clutch problem. The tink tink tink and having to lift up to shift leads me to think its in side the tranny.

The "Ting Ting" is probably the shifter touching the drive shaft because the aft shift platform support has failed. This also forces the shifter towards the 2/4 end of the travel.

That jives with having to lift up when shifting out of second and forth. Looks like its time to pull the tranny...

No need to pull the tranny. Just the driveline. The shifter is behind the transmission above the drive shaft...

IIRC one can replace the shifter mounting blocks without removing exhaust or dshaft. Needs to be dextrous though, and patient.

But yeah, if with a five speed, (happened to me) the mount at the rear of the platform separates and the rear drops a couple inches, leading to difficult shifting. I could still drive if I lifted the shifter up first about 2 inches. The busted part is typically a rubber bush with studs at each end, a common part for air cleaner mounts on injected cars. Any wreck will likely have a couple that may be useful, or inexpensive at your FLAP.

Or was that on the 2002?

Finally had the time to investigate the problem and it turns out one if the M8 bolts that hold the shift platform block to the transmission was missing.... The tink tink tink was the shift platform bouncing off the drive shaft. Took about 15 minutes to replace!
