There is tubing running from the engine compartment through the fire wall and running over the glovebox extending towards the back of the car (trunk area...).

It has been broken inside my passenger compartment, so I'm wondering:

What is it's purpose ?
Is it necessary to fix the break in the line?

Thanks.

That's the fuel tank vapor line to the charcoal cannister located under the battery. You should repair or replace it (it gets brittle with age and will eventually crack again somewhere else) in order to prevent gas smells in the cabin. I vented mine out the trunk floor behind the gas tank to prevent any trunk and cabin odors and removed the cannister.
