Well I was out in the wobbly cal last night trying to set the timing post head gasket change. The car was responding well to more advance. On the way home I was pushing along and then noticed the temp gauge up just in the red. I managed to pretty much free wheel home.

When I open the bonnet water has been expelled from the radiator header and tank is empty. I wait a while and refill cracking the bleeder. It takes a litre or so. All the while I have had the heater on and it was blowing hot.

Car starts back up but idled high. It eventually settled down but idle was rougher than before.

I took it for a drive and temp and water stayed where they should!

Now the oil cap is not milky. No real exhaust steam or oil on header tank.

Compressions all 182 - 195. no real difference in the plugs, none of them steam cleaned!

I'm worried head is cracked but the above suggests its ok.

I'm puzzled by the rougher idle more than anything. I will take it for a longer run I guess and see what happens.
