Yesterday I talked with the Fab Lab Director of the local technical college. They are willing to build a mold to recreate the sun visor pivots. In fact, they can make them stronger so they will not break. I have a couple questions:

1. Were are of these white in color?

2. Does the application extend beyond the E9?

3. Is there a difference between the left and right pivot mount?

Thanks,

jim

Thanks, Dan, but the part the website showed was not the pivot mount, but rather the holder for the arm peg.

Sunvisor pivots

Available.

Here's one source-http://www.bmwclassicparts.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=cs&Category_Code=cs-sun-visors

But I understand C. Nelson has them too. Certainly the clips as they're advertised.

Yes, they are handed. The originals had a sleeve with an end that had a metal fitting cast into the plastic. That sleeve would corrode/ flake, make the operation stiff, then break. Once made one work by patience and a lot of penetrant, wiggle till it moves. Been working for a long time now. Worth a shot. Might have a broken part that might be useful in making a mold. I'll look- as right now rebuilding a heater motor that started smoking- well the bearings siezed. Lucky it was in the garage when it happened. Not nice to see smoke coming out the hood vents.

The replacements don't use metal. I had to ream the part a bit for the smoothest action since my wife/kid grabs it. It should be functional, so it is now.

Any idea if the application went beyond the E9's?

Apparently all the ones I have are then not original because none has a sleeve, nor any indication that they ever had one. The metal hex that is part of the sun visor fits tightly into the plastic pivot.

I have one visor that I took the pivot off of. Yesterday I put a wrench on it and lo and behold it will turn. I added some lube, but think I will take the keeper and spring off to see if I can clean it up even more with a wire wheel. If so I will not be afraid to use it as designed (i.e. swing it over to the side window when necessary). I have always wondered why manufacturers did not produce two-parted visors, one for the front and one for the side that could be used at the same time. My Nissan Titan has those but alas the plastic broke and now I'm with only one.

No not really for interchange.

I've even used valve grinding paste. But for the cost and avoiding the agrevation, just buy the replacements. Even they require a little work where the bend in the pivot rod rides and has to be enlarged to get a really smooth action.

The interchange - the pivot screws to the head liner panel on an angle. I just didn't want to wobble out the holes or drill new given how they act up.
