Swapping oil filter holder questions

One on the left came off the 2800 (bolt head on the bottom).

I want to swap to the one on the right that came off the 528.


Qs:

1) the old one didn't have a gasket (holder to block) when I took it off. Should it?

2) the 528 top bolt one has some spring in it. No big deal? Should be compatible w/this older 2800 (came off a 1980 2.8L)?

Should be a gasket. There are 3 different configurations of filter head and they will all interchange on an M30 block. So look in realoem and make sure you get the proper gasket. You can see in the diagram which one will fit the filter head you intend to use. just make sure all of the port openings match up.

Yes, also confirm - there should be a spring in old type oil filter holder. Have two two of them and both have springs with safety valves as was mentioned.

The shape is quite complicated (inside), I tried to made that gasket some time ago and without the pattern the effect was not satisfactory.
Maybe if he had an old gasket and could draw the exact shape - ok, but without it it would be hard.

A ball-peen hammer is what you need to deal with the intracacies... using the ball part, tap along the edges of the pattern thinning the paper until it pulls apart easily...hope that makes sense.

The three different gaskets, any of which will be appropriate depending on the internal shape of the filter head, are all dealer available at $2.50 each.

Yes they're cheap, but driving 10 miles to my dealer, ordering the gasket, waiting a couple days for the dealer to get it, then going back to pick it up....easier for me just to make one.
