My RPM needle jumps automatically to 1500 rpm when I turn the ignition on i.e. without starting the car. It goes right to 4500 rpm when I start the car and it is idling. It bounces all over the place when I rev the car. any ideas as to how to correct this?

Your going to have to check all the wiring .....
1...wire from the low tension side of the coil to the back of the tachometer.
2.. At the coil is the tach feed attached to post labelled 15 or 16, basically the positive side?
3... Next ensure the earth (ground) from the multi plug on the back of the dash to earth, and the earth from the tachometer housing is ok
4... From the multiplug to the tachometer feed.

Once you are happy with all your continuity checks and the problem persists then it is probably the tachometer.
If you have or can "borrow" a known good one to check that would be a great help.
