From the desk of Goetz Pfafflin,
President of the BMW Vintage & Classic Car Club of America (BMW V&CCCA)

Due to a very positive response to our initial announcement of the BMW V&CCCA Monterey 2016 Caravan we have decided to proceed with further planning.
In the meantime we have renamed our project “The Roads to Monterey 2016” as a more descriptive label than “BMW V&CCCA Monterey 2016 Caravan”, - but it’s the same program, with the same actors, at the same time, - just a new name!

Our agenda for Monterey is to bring as many of our members as possible, and members of the CCA and any other BMW Club recognized by the International Council of BMW Clubs to Monterey in time for the celebration of 100 YEARS OF BMW.

BMW was established in Munich in 1916 out of Rapp Motorenwerke, and while the official centennial celebration of this beginning will be staged on March 7, 2016 in Munich with the dedication of the then to have been completed BMW Group Classic center at Moosacher Strasse, the main U.S. celebration of this 100th birthday is being planned in conjunction with Monterey Car Week 2016.

While there are various automotive events on the calendar during the week preceding the historic races at Laguna Seca (Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion) and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (August 20-21, 2016), such as various major auctions, displays, rallies, etc., the BMW-specific activities start on Friday, August 19, 2016 with the Legends of the Autobahn. The CCA’s Oktoberfest 2016 will start with registration on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Correspondingly our Roads to Monterey 2016 group plans to arrive in Monterey on Wednesday, August 17.
The BMW V&CCCA’s Roads to Monterey 2016 program will conclude on Tuesday morning, August 23 (coincident with registration for CCA’s Oktoberfest).

Here is the Monterey portion of our schedule:
● Wed, Aug 17: Arrive in Monterey
● Thu, Aug 18: Rest day
● Fri, Aug 19: Legends of the Autobahn
● Sat, Aug 20: Historic Races at Laguna Seca (with CCA coral)
● Sun, Aug 21: Historic Races at Laguna Seca (with CCA coral) or Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
● Mon, Aug 22: Group drive south on California Route 1 past Big Sur with optional visit to Hearst Castle and other sites.

Conditions:
Participation in The Roads to Monterey 2016 is open to all members of the BMW V&CCCA and indeed all members of the CCA and of any other BMW club recognized by the International Council of BMW Clubs, driving a BMW automobile or motorcycle. (no alternate makes of cars or bikes will be permitted, except in cases of emergency, such as breakdowns, etc.)

The final planning, currently in process, will define a number of Roads starting points across the U.S. Coordinators for the various starting points will be identified. However regardless of your home location, if you don’t want to drive all the way across the country, you may join a Roads group anywhere along the way. For example a number of folks have expressed an interest in shipping their cars to Denver or Boulder, CO, and joining the Denver / Boulder group for the drive to Monterey.
For the group traveling from Denver / Boulder to Monterey binding hotel and dinner reservations will be made from Sunday, August 14 to and including Monday, August 22.
Details will be provided in the registration form.

The tentative driving schedule from
Denver / Boulder to Monterey is as follows:
● Sun, Aug 14: from Denver / Boulder, CO to Springville, UT (approx. 500 miles)
● Mon, Aug 15: from Springville, UT to South Lake Tahoe, CA (approx. 650 miles)
● Tue, Aug 16: from South Lake Tahoe to Sonoma, CA (approx. 180 miles) for visit to the home of long-time BMW VCCC&A members Jim and Gloria Smith for a reunion and to view their collection of vintage BMWs.
● Wed, Aug 17, 2016: scenic route from Sonoma to Monterey, CA (approx. 165 miles, across the Golden Gate Bridge and through San Francisco)

A website with additional information regarding The Roads to Monterey 2016 will be set up shortly.
