There is an UP side to HOARDING with OLD Cars and things are NOT always as they seem.

There are some of you guys that think I am buying everything E9 that is offered for sale just to "HOARD" the stuff... That is NOT the case! As Scott pointed out I have (5) E9s and ALL are different a 1970 2800CS, a 1972 3.0CS plus a CSi, a 1973 3.0CS, and a 1974 3.0CS

Let me explain to you a few things that you do NOT know. Although the parts I buy may look good, allot of the parts when I get them are in just fair condition. So if I buy a pair of center console side panels and one has drama I will have try to find another pair to buy to hopefully get a nice set... If the second pair also has drama I will be forced to buy a third pair. You guys will think I am buying every set just to hoard them which is NOT true. Plus there are two types of side panels AC and Non AC... Four of my E9s have AC the CSi does NOT have AC.

And what you guys also do not understand that these E9 parts are NOT all the SAME! The Chrome Bumpers are different, Bumper Guards are different, the Trunk Panels are cut differently from year to year with three different types, There are three different Lower Dash Knee Bars that are NOT interchangeable, There are three different types of under dash panels! There are three different Turn Signal Switches, The Gauges are different, The Overflow Tanks are different, The Steering Wheels are different with 7-8 different types, The Window Motors are different etc etc... Then the CSi has lots of parts that are totally unique to a CSi...

How many of you know that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the 1974 E9 interior is the same as the previous E9s? Not one thing is the same! The Seats, Door Panels, Dash, Window Switches, Steering Column, Turn Signal Switch are unique and are ALL 1974 ONLY!!! I will bet that you never knew that the 1974 E9 has a Telescoping Steering Column or that the Turn Signal Switch is on the left side or that the Access Door for the Hood Release Turns instead of having a Button... It is NOT just the Bumpers that are Unique the 1974 E9 has tons of other 1974 ONLY parts... It is like a different Model E9 an E9B... Again when you see me buying lots of parts it is often because the last part I bought was not that nice or did NOT work or does NOT fit!

A few weeks ago the Alternator light came on in my 2800CS... I could have removed the Alternator driven to the rebuilders shop waited a few days and driven back but that did NOT happen... I know Old Cars and had the foresight to plan ahead and I had a spare Alternator on the shelf and the car was fixed in 30 minutes... I also have a spare Starter,Distributor, Window Switches, Relays, Turn Signal Switches and other misc. electrical parts that often fail on Old Cars... Plus because Erik at Coupeking told me that D-Jet Injection is prone to Injector/ECU Brain failures and he also said that D-Jet parts are impossible to find. So following his advice I bought a COMPLETE spare CSi Injection system (Brain, Wiring Loom ,Fuel Tank, Injectors, CSi Distributor, Throttle Body Etc Etc) Just so I am covered when the SH!T hits the fan... It is sure nice to be able to open a box and pull out a good used part when you are unexpectedly forced to NEED one.

The interior in the Great Pumpkin was in excellent condition EXCEPT for the left side of the Center Console was all torn up like they tend to be. Yesterday I took the dash apart and replaced the left side with one I had that was much better and only had a tiny flaw that I repaired... I saw that the underdash panel was torn up so I replaced that also. Was I glad that I had planned ahead and bought a few spare parts that are known to have drama... In a word... YES! Now the interior in the Great Pumpkin is nearly PERFECT...

Is this "HOARDING" or is it being prepared with (5) E9s for the inevitable?

Hey with 5 coupes you would certainly need alot of spare parts, and nothing wrong with continually upgrading to better looking components and what the hay if you have the space to store all that stuff and the $$$ to afford to buy it..go for it!

I'm on the hunt for a spare alternator and starter now.

I agree if you need it and have the money buy it. I view collecting parts for these cars is like buying silver or gold because it will most likely only be going up! For me I always have to sell my wife on this idea 1st when purchasing a part and that can be tuff sell. Even when I find a set of Alpina's for 450.00. I hoping in my travels to see that 73 csi on blocks in someone's driveway/yard and them not knowing what they have and drag that baby home cheap for all to share!

Don't be sooooooooooooooo sensitive. Have a bit of a sense of humor.

You are sooooooooooooooooooooooo sensitive!!!!!! I made a joke on a parts for sale forum (73 bumpers for sale to be specific) claiming that you buy everything but also stated it was in humor and am sure you are a great guy. You don't need to try to educate us with a long post and explain your reasoning for everything you do. If you have the money and want to buy everything and anything you see more power to you.

Here are my posts that rattled his feathers if anyone cares:

With execmalibu in the picture you will never be first, second or third in line for anything. I think the man has an assistant permanently on this board checking everything that comes up for sale as soon as it comes up for sale. :)

A member stated what I said might be a bit harsh which made me realize it might not have come across in good humor as I had intended so I followed by up by this post:

It was just some light humor to start my Friday morning. I am sure he is a great guy and only buys what he needs. :)

I at one point thought that I needed a spare Sunbeam electric lawnmower in case my Canadian made alloy bodied, twin blade Sunbeam ate another motor. I drove out to Niagara falls to pick one up one Sunday afternoon (1.5 hour drive each way). I know I have a problem. The guy selling it on Craigslist thought he had met someone who escaped from Nurse Ratchet's ward.
BTW, Sunbeam twin blade mowers do not work well at all.

guys - my point of this reply is to NOT chase guys who contribute to the betterment of our coupes away - even if it is only occasionally . i have seen that happen on this forum as well as the e30 m3 sig. the one problem with written posts in a forum is that you can't always tell the inflection of what somebody writes. i kinda felt sorry for Jeff (a little), jealous too when he picked up the great pumpkin, we all kinda piled it on him on the alpina wheel thread. i have to admit, i tried to buy the pumpkin an hour or so too late.

seriously - Jeff has tried to explain what he is doing, in a lot of detail, and i can't tell if people (forum members) think he is either talking down to them, or if they think he is bragging or has a superiority complex. i dunno. but the responses have become predictable on his posts. i get it that Jeff's sense of humor sometimes gets lost in translation into printed form ... so perhaps he is an acquired taste for some. perhaps if some of you would send a PM to him and give him your recommendations. lets work on keeping content going in a positive direction - PLEASE

I've met Jeff and I like him. Jeff, it sounds like you may have an assortment of parts in your collection that 'didn't work out' or didn't make the grade. If you wouldn't object, I might PM you from time to time to see if you have anything that would work for me, at fair market price of course. My coupe is 'flexible,' and would entertain parts from other years, especially if that means it gets to ditch its diving board bumpers. We're neighbors almost. Either way, no harm intended in the bumpers thread.

Jeff:
If I may add to your well-described summary of the differences by year/model...I just discovered a CSi steering wheel is a smaller diameter than the CS wheel (by about 1-2 inches.) I can sell the larger wheel if you want it ( missing a horn contact spring....)

If we keep up the "this is also different" thread we can add it to the "Buyer's Guide" under model differences.

:)

For the hoarding test, like many other endeavors, we should ask "Cui Bono"?
Who benefits?

Specifically, the only missing part in Verona is part# 51 41 6 440 264, a black door lock grommet I was unable to find. If you have such part, and fits Verona, and I can get it from you, then hoarding passes the Cui Bono test as it benefits the community, and me in particular.

Res Non Verba.

Histrionic narcissism is best in person.
On a a chat-style forum theres something lost in translation.

I have talked to Jeff on the phone about parts and he was very nice and had a great sense of humor.
The context was that I have an old parts car that a friend's son was going to help me dismantle, and I was going to sell the dash to Jeff. Well, the friend's son flaked out, and I still have the hulk intact. So, basically I had to renegg (?) on my offer to sell the dash because I do not have the time to deal with it myself (three small kids and two working parents). He was very nice and very understanding about the whole thing.

In the Ferrari world, guys like Francois Sicard have been buying up parts for years ("hoarding"). Now, decades later, if you need a part for the seats in a 330 GT, he might have one and you know where the old parts are. Coupe King buys up old parts, Coupeguy, LJI BMW, so what's the difference? It's a free market out there...
