So my coupe has been having problems with overheating. Going through the checklist, I've decided to replace the thermostat. I noticed a small pinhole on the thermostat housing. Called my dad and had him look at our spare motor to check if it also had a hole in the same place. He said it had a hole, but it didn't sound to be the same over the phone.

So I'm wondering if this hole is suppose to be there? Is it some breathe hole? Thanks for the help/knowledge.

The thermostat cover and the water bypass housing suffer from corrosion, usually under the hoses themselves. You can repair them with JBWeld. You have a pin hole leak in that cover.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Is it aluminum? If so I could weld it as a temporary fix till I get another housing.

no possible hole in that place, you must run out of coolant through it (by the way, have you realised coolant level decreasing ? ), it is possible that internal corrosion was blocking the hole somehow, but, I insist, you can not drive the car in that condition, the circuit is overpressured, so you will have a serious problem

I myself would replace the part, it is still available at BMW dealer, and it is not expensive (something like 40 Eur (maybe 50 $ ??))

in my case the problem was worse and I had to change the cover and the housing (this case meant also a change in the thermostat, take care of the apropriate parts)

When I drove it, the first couple blocks the temp gauge spiked then went down to where it usually was. This was the first time it spiked. It also was the first hot day of the year. It was around 90 degrees (California). About to call La Jolla see how much a good used one is.

Thanks for the help everyone!
