Hi all,

I ended up pulling the motor on my 1970 2800 instead of messing with trying to change rod bearings with motor in place.

Made a not-so-nice discovery.

Here is a short recap...I bought the car out of a storage unit where it had been sitting for 17 years.

The car ran when I picked it up, albeit poorly. The interim owner (a friend of the storage facility where it was parked) got it running. God knows how, but it ran enough to drive it onto my trailer.

I drained the tank, cleaned the fuel system and went through the carbs. Car ran pretty good but had a rod knock at start-up.

Drove it a few times for very short distances and decided to look into the knock.
Yanked the motor the other day. I actually dropped it out the bottom with trans since it's going to need looked at as well. Has a bad bushing noise in neutral that goes away when depressing the clutch. Anywho, that's another story.

The head has a stamping on it from Engine Specialties and looks like it's seen very little run time.

The bad news is the crank. It is ruined. The thrust bearing is almost gone and eating into the crank. I can't imagine it's salvageable. Perhaps welding and refinishing but I'm thinking about getting a replacement. The number 6 rod bearing was worn all the way through as well.

I have my suspicions that the short time the previous owner had the car, he effed it up but I can't confirm that. It is what it is.

I'm going to start the hunt for a crank and wanted to check with you guys to see if anyone has a one that's not buggered up. I don't mind having to polish or even grind the rod or main journals .020 as long as the crank is true and has good thrust areas.

Here are some pix.

Thanks,

Mark
