Threaded Port on Side on Motor??

I cranked up the lathe and cut some quick treads on some scrap to see what I could figure out, 3/4" stock at 13 thread per inch, runs right in, needs to be more like .850 diameter material. Some obscure thread, plug, what ever, who ever used. Worst case I make a plug and move on. The motor is going in the car today regardless.

Merely punching is only part of the chore. All the interior coolant passages are probably similarly gunked up. If your engine doesn't run hot, great. There are coolant flush products sold at your FLAP. Usually you pour in a pint of the stuff, run several weeks, then drain, rinse thoroughly, and refill with proper coolant.

I had a 2002 cylinder head off and spent an hour simply scraping and flushing (only the accessible!) caked on crud from the coolant passages. Since the cylinder walls receive most of the heat after the cylinder head, it may have been time well spent. That particular car was a pig in a poke: had sat more than several years, and the water jacket had rusted through to 3 of 4 combustion chamber. It started and sorta ran, but I couldn't see the ground through the vapor coming out of the tailpipe. I can thus verify from personal experience that coolant leaks create white smoke out the tail pipe, and LOTS of it, too. This was admittedly a severe case.... the head was replaced by one from a 318i. That combo produces slightly lower compression and needed an electric fuel pump.
