To buy or not to buy

More photos of the rust areas, undercarriage and interior are essential given you have no history. How much is the seller asking?

There are people on this site who can speak the issues once they have seen more. The good, it is an injected euro coupe, looks mostly complete.

Wait for the others to chime in.

Without more detailed photos and description- the engine swap, non standard paint, and cleaned up engine compartment indicate to me this car has undergone some restoration in it's lifetime. The rust that is showing indicates that there is probably more to find beneath the skin. I would inspect the usual places for deterioration such as floors, rockers and upper front wheel wells. If you are lucky, the previous owner will have made some proper rust repairs already. If so, hopefully these have held up.

Weigh how much corrosion you find against what your final intention is-

If you want to drive it for a few years and the rust doesn't bother you AND you can purchase it reasonably, then go for it!

If you intend to restore it, and keep it for a length of time, then figure on spending at least twice as much as you paid for the car to get it to the point of requiring simple maintenance. The final tally of how much you spend will depend on how far you want to enhance your ride.

Good Luck!

TE pictures

Warning: these BMW E9's are more prone to rust than any other car I've ever known. Some of the early 1980's Fiats might give them a run for the money, but I think the E9 still wins the rust race by a nose. Generally, what looks like a few innocent bubbles means lots of hidden rust.

Great pictures of the Essen show. Some of the engine pics are really nice (I like the Jag inline 6 with the Weber 45's, but that lambo motor is over the top).

Go to the links section and look at the restorations at the top. Education is the best tool you can have.

The E9 is a sultry siren that lures one in and dashes hopes in rust.

Looks like the type of rust that has set in everywhere. I'd keep looking.

Thanks

Thank you for all your reactions!
The seller wants about 5000 dollar for the car.
My biggest fear is to find a lot more rust behind the dashbord.
I will have a closer look this week. I want to keep the car for a long time, so i'm thinking the best way to go, for now. Is buy a car in a better condition, rather then restoring one. I am not very experienced with restorations.
But i definitely want a e9, it's a dream car! I reading alot of the posts on the forum and learning alot about the car. thanks for all the quick replys

I like the colour but i don't think it's original. What do you think?

Advise from the netherlands

I have sent an Email to your account (in dutch / nederlands)
My advise; do inspect further, i expect more then you can see on the pictures.

Regards uit Brabant,
Erik.

lieuwe,

ziet er niet best uit. zou er nog maar eens goed over nadenken.Je kan beter een wagen uit dse wat zuidelijkere EU landen halen en daar mee aan de slag gaan.

Or in english, does not look good, I would rethink buying this one.

To buy or not to buy--

Based only on the few pictures you have shown--there are strong indications of serious rust issues at the base of the "A" pillar, the rear section of the hood/bonnet that is a double layer of steel and lastly the base of the "C" pillar also suggests that very serious problems lie beneath. Your prospect is a basket case!!

I would suggest--walk away quickly and continue to look elsewhere.

Also--I do not believe the blue paint color to be original to the e9 in question.

That's clear!!!

Thank's for the advice. I will continue my search to find a car in a better condition. It's really helpful to talk to people with some experience.
The forum is a great way to learn about the cars.
