Has anyone replaced a later (post mid-1974 facelift) tool box with an earlier, original version? Assuming the earlier style gray elephant hide pieces would likewise need to be used, but can an early box replace a later box?

Seems like it should work with maybe some new holes drilled to fit, but curious to know whether someone has done this before.

Erik, i wasn't aware that the trunk panels were different between the early / late coupes. i can't answer if the early style would fit on the trunk lid ... i don't know why it wouldn't.

Wouldn't be the first time I was mistaken. So, the tool boxes are interchangeable?

Wasn't the attachment screw a bit different between the old and the late/new OEM ones?

Is this the one you're looking to get?

That is the earlier box design that I was going to try to re-fit in place of the later style that I believe is original to my car. My later, "more indestructible" style box is broken at the access screw area.

Was trying to remember where I picked up the idea that the panels were different and think that it was from bert35csi's post from the thread you referenced.

If anyone is using this re-issued box, is it really any stronger than the original box?

the shape between the 2 boxes varies a bit, but the holes for the hinge fit. the gray elephant skin pieces need to be changed if you use the late version... I developed the gray skin pieces for an E3 toolboxes (both versions)

@Erik - you are right, they do look different. i was thinking that the 'ears' of the early toolbox went behind the cover panel ... but it looks like memory is wrong. i did a search on realoem and the orange books - the '71 and the '74 panel is the same.

Looks like Al has the definitive layout on the patterns. Maybe he knows the panel part numbers?

No, maybe it's for E24/28 toolbox, I don´t know... but I wanna use it in my E3... So I have both patterns options

Alvaro, on the 2 pieces for the e9, you might want to shave a little bit where the 2 pieces come together - to allow the thickness of the vinyl. as always, your products look great and precise - well done !!
Does anyone have the PNs for both? Real OEM shows the same PN for all years E3 and E9. 71111102916
Dick are you asking for the part numbers for the toolboxes or the panels?

the original toolbox part number (from the orange book) - 71 11 1 102 916
the 74 box was 71 11 1 115 327

the shape of the 2 boxes is basically the same from what i can tell
