Toolbox compatibility

To save some time (rather than trial & erros):
can I replace the later, molded plastic toolcase by the earlier one with hard foam separation ? in a 1974 car ???

I recently saw it done the other way around: late toolbox in early car. The later toolboxes are smaller around where the closing knob is, so there was a gap in the trunk upholstery covers.
