tranny gear selector??

Hi, my car is not starting, initially when I had this problem I would put forward pressure on the gear shifter in Park, autobox (BW), and it would start. Now I could bend the shifter forward and it will not, (it will not start even in N) I have swapped the start relay with no luck, unless the swapped used relay was bad also. I am guessing it’s the shift selector unit (dark silver/grey color) that is installed on the tranny itself.
Question, does the shifter rod attach to yet another selector right under the center counsel? Not sure if my memory is playing tricks, for some reason I’m thinking there is another unit there (black in color). I don’t want to start removing thing just to find out. Second, does anyone have a used selector (the one that attaches to the tranny), mostly to those who have swapped their auto to 5spd. Thanks.

I had such problems when the selector had lots of play. Was fixed on the linkage below the console and in particular a bad circlip.

If you are talking about the actual mechanical linkage (nothing to do with electrical) that’s under the counsel area, underneath the car, I check that first, everything looked ok, giggled, moved, etc. with no luck. I’m pretty sure mine is an electrical issue, besides I already took out the selector switch that attaches to the tranny, opened it up, tried to re-solder the contacts and made a mess out of it, so I need one anyway. Thanks for the heads up though.

The electrical switch I believe is mostly to control the neutral safety switch, the gear display, and the backup light. You can bypass the neutral safety switch to get the car to start and be able to drive it until you find a replacement.

Neutral Safety Switch

If you can't find a switch for your BW look for a 76 thru 82 5,6 or 7 series in salvage you could use the shifter box from one of those. It will bolt directly into your coupe, be sure to get the electrical plug and wiring harness The safety switch is in the with shifter assembly. Use a relay to allow the starter to engage in park or neutral only.

There are two different electrical switches depending on the transmission, is yours ZF or Borg Warner?
You may want to check with Mr. sfdon

Believe I have a spare which might be available, from my 8/72 build coupe, removed when I converted to manual shift. But so would a dozen others who have done similar conversions if they aren't hoarding.

Do you have the part number?

Perhaps unrelated but the starter relay on the automatics has a constant 12V input directly from the fuse box. If there is any contact issue and 12 volts is not seen, turning the key yields zero. I cleaned all the fuse box contacts (I think it's sixth fuse from the left but not 100%) to solve the issue.
