Growing up in the '50's, my father didn't like rock n roll. He sometimes would buy 45 rpm records that were funny stories put to music.
"Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus was a car-guy special and he was a self-taught mechanic who did all of his own work.
As a 10-year-old in 1956, this song has lyrics that I still remember today.
And every Forum member is a car-guy that needs to hear this song.

The original "Need for Speed" song...

Drew

Hadn’t thought of that one for a long time, used to be played a lot on Dr. Demento radio show.
Eric--The comments on youTube talk about Dr. Demento. That must have been a West Coast program. We never heard that in the Philly area.

Now I remember where I heard this.................driver education. Played at the first session as a scare tactic. That's why it took me 30 years before I bought a BMW, it's his fault.
BTW Dr. Demento's favorite color was Turkis.
BTTW: My first statement is a complete lie.

Hey, Daddy-O, Make that Type O huh? Attaboy!!!!

Dr. Demento was a Chicago staple, too. It made it at least as far as the great lakes.
Definitely. In Madison, for sure. Very late. But not late enough for a 12-year-old.

@ablank135 great link, never knew his story, he was just an odd duck relegated to the late Sunday time slot. The article explains the transfusion song connection too.

Quite different, but related and equally wide-spread I think, how about Tom and Ray Magliozzi's Car Talk? Ray passed away several years ago, and I miss that show. The subject matter and their humor - the laughs, OMG - always put a smile on my face. Especially when their automotive advice stretched into marital counseling, which was more often than not.

I can still hear the jingle, 94.7 A Little Bit of Heaven, KMET, tweedle-deee where Dr Demento broadcast. The other personality of that era was Wolfman Jack who broadcast from Mexico on XERF and XERB with 50,000 watts which was huge in the time.

Sounds like Nervous Norvus was an OG Rapper.

Tom and Ray were replaced by some idiocy called, "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. When they kill that show and Judy Woodruff retires from the PBS Newshour I will start giving again.

Just my opinion. Not humble or self-effacing or meek. So no reason to argue about it.

There, now don't I feel better.

Oh, we really like Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. It was better when Carl Kassel was the announcer. Chicago based show. We've seen it (heard it?) live a few times. Sorry to hear your market plugged it into the Car Talk slot to your dislike.

Another one we like is Says You. But again, much better with the former host, Richard Sher.

Car talk guys were both MIT grads, they hid it well.
I think one of them was actually an MIT prof while the other owned a garage. I like the fact that they started off with diverging career paths but ended up back in the same place.

I think one of my favorite things about the show was when they'd try and guess how someone's name (usually a woman's) was spelled based on where they lived.

Also the law firm of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe of course.

Agree very much on both of these great shows. I don’t mind Bill Curtis but I really do miss Richard Sher.

I assume Richard Sher was not related to John Sher who sponsored all these great concerts at MAdison Sq Garden when I was a kid.......he did not sponsor the beverage of choice I always snuck in however.
