transmission 3.0cs1972

The transmission should select years with steady fingertip pressure. Not going into gear is a sign that you have worn synchros, a misrigged selecter, or a dragging clutch.

Drain and refill the tranny with Royal Purple Synchromax. If that doesn't make it more acceptable, check to see if the clutch is dragging. To do so, clutch in, and try to select first gear. If it won't go into gear, continue holding pressure on the shifter. While holding pressure on the shifter, turn the car off. It it goes into gear once the engine is off, you know the clutch is dragging and needs to be fixed.

Finally, rebuild the shift linkage.

If that doesn't clean it up, it's just an old worn tranny that needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
