Hi all,

I'm a new memenber. I've bought a e9 3.o csi two mounth ago. I'm absolutly in love of it.

My car was registered in may 1973 in barcelona (Spain).

When I run with it i hear a noise that disapear when I go in free wheel, (that means with aout any gear).

Is thear some one who have an idea about the possible origin about that noise?.
Is there an other spanish mameber?

Thanks!! :)

Josep,
Don't worry your English is a lot better than my Spanish!

As per the previous posts and
check the Gublo joint, the rubber donut at the back of the gearbox, they do start to fail.
While your under there check your gearbox mounts they go soft.
Try moving the prop shaft and see if there is a lot of movement.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Cunning plan below.........

If Josep is "alone" in Bareclona maybe some of the "London boys" should mount a moral support trip, probably could drive it in 24 hours!
Even Oranger in Austria might be looking for an excuse for a road trip!! Me? I would love to but the bucket has no wheels and the 2002 engine is drinking oil like there's no tomorrow!

Thank you very much, yes, Barcelona is a nice city in dead, with a lot of pleasents roads to run with our gorgeous E-9's.

Otherwise, I'll go to "Le Mans Classiques" next July with my 3.0 csi and other fellows guys wth some Jaguar, Prosche and so on. May be that could be a nice ocation to organise an international E-9 meeting!.

Now that sounds like a plan!!!!!!!Malc? DaveB? who else??

If the problem is in the input (prop?) shaft bearing you should hear the noise when the car is in neutral with the clutch released. It will also make noise when moving and in gear. I've replaced a few of these bearings over the years and my coupe is currently in need of this but I am waiting for warmer weather. It is an easy fix once the transmission is out. Be sure the change the gasket - so recommend gasket adhesive be used too.

However, since you indicate that it is not happening in neutral the problem is likely father back. The guibo disk is an inexpensive and easily located part worth changing. They generally don't make any sounds until they fail and the rubber comes apart. The center support bearing fails in two ways: 1, the rubber rots and the drive shaft wobbles violently (you will notice this) or 2, the bearing go bad and it will make a loud buzzing near the parking brake. Farther back, the universal joint bearing can go bad. They will either fail and you will get a clunking sound with you put power to the wheels or they can howl like you suggest. The howling will usually not be very loud. From your description the differential sounds like a possible candidate. There are bearings that will howl and, if the alignment of the ring and pinion is off it can howl. This is a messy job to repair - have you checked the differential (and transmission) fluid levels? Finally the problem could be with a CV joint or wheel. Usually the sound will be different when turning left or right.

Can you tell where the sound is coming from? Front, back, center, left/ right?

Happy New Year everybody!

A friend of mine has been trying to persuade me to visit Le Mans for ages. I will look into it. Could be fun.
