While driving on mountain roads I noticed that when downshifting, 3rd to 2nd the engine revs very high. This seems to make it hard to use the transmission for effective speed control.
(by the way I am still working on my carburetor sync and adjustments- thanks for all the help given in my previous thread)
Do others have the same experience?

When I make the decision to change over to the Getrag 265 it looks like I may run into the same issue.

Would I be better off with a close ratio? I know there are reliability concerns with this transmission but it may work better for downshifting.
What are the ratios on the close ratio transmission?

5pd----------------- 4pd
1st 3.82 : 1------------ 3.85 : 1
2nd 2.20 : 1 ----------- 2.08 : 1
3rd 1.40 : 1 ----------- 1.375 : 1
4th 1.00 : 1 ----------- 1.0 : 1
5th 0.81 : 1 ---------- N/A
reverse 3.71 : 1 ----- 4,13 : 1

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight.

Yes, I think your'e correct. I thought the four speed was way too wide for use. I thought the five speed would cure this. I never checked the ratios between the two. I went with the five speed and still have the second to third jump. 1000+ RPM? The five speed does not cure the wide ratio effect but the 70-80 MPH speed range is nice at 2500-2800 RPM
