I just purchased all of the running gear from a 78 euro 635csi. The transmission is a Getrag 262 5 speed, but an OD not a CR.

The transmission was flushed, cleaned and checked out to be reinstalled, but the the guy I bought it from never finished the body and abandoned the project.

Is this transmission the same construction as the 265/5? Or does it have the same weak points as the 262 CR?

Would I need to change the length of the shift mechanism to get it to fit?

Thanks,
Wayne

5 speed swap question

The case of the 265 is cast marked as 262; so yes, it is the same if OD. It must be a three peice case.

No , the OD does not suffer from the reported CR woes.

The preferred shifter mechanism to use is from a 528 which is compatible with the length, unless modifications can be made. ( probably more trouble than it's worth.)

There should be plenty of information in the tech section on 5 speed swaps to help you.

Thanks 61rsporsche for the info.

Does anyone have a 528e or 528i shifter assembly laying around?

What is the length of the connecting link on the shifter mechanism, center of pin to center of pin"? My 635csi link is 5.95" (151mm)

I just want to know what I am shopping for and that it is the right part to fit with the 5 speed in the CS body.

Anyone have a spare they want to sell?

Thanks,
Wayne

that rod is too long by 5mm
make sure you use the asymmetric rod that is 35mm on one end and 25mm on the other

Call double02 salvage in Hayward- they have all the parts you need.

Talk to Marshall.

And if you talk to Marshall say "hi" to him from Dale for me? :-D

I am on the hunt for the 528 shift linkage.:)

sfdon - what is the propuse for the asymetrical rod? Is the 528 shift lever wider? My 635 shifter fits the 25mm long shaft and is also a short shift lever. I was hoping to reuse it, but it is not necessary.

Thanks again for the info,
Wayne
