I used Intercity from Idaho to Buffalo. . Cost more, car was inside the truck. No Complaints other than it took a while because they were waiting for some fancier cars to combine with a Barret Jackson auction.
I shipped a car from CA to the east coast a while back, and it seemed like most of the companies you can contact directly use independent contractors for the actual hauling, so I picked the one that seemed to have the best insurance policy.
I recently used horseless carriage to ship my latest acquisition from LA to South Florida and the total charge was 1900. They're enclosed and they are the shippers for new Ferraris from the port to the dealers. This was a great price and they have weekly trips cross country.

Didn't transport a car, but a boat. Companies bid for you - may give you a good deal and still use a reputable one. Also has ratings, reviews, etc. It's like ebay in a way.
