Trany question

I know it is recommended to use a 5 speed trany from an e28 but would others work for the 4 to 5 speed conversion. There is a 1985 318i for sale near where I live - would this trany work in my E9.

You can use any transmission that was mated to a M30, S38, or S14 engine, as they all share a common bellhousing bolt pattern. The M10 from the 318 uses a different pattern and a smaller transmission case, so you can't bolt the 318's transmission up to the M30 bellhousing.

So, the trans won't work.
