Traveling with a LSD rear end

Bought above contraption, alas it weighs 80Lbs. dry.

In order to make a suitable (2)small crates (boxes) to fit in my luggage, I have to divide the LSD into 2 sections:

1. The two output flanges (how to remove, I know, the 2 bolts, holding one vs. other?) require to be removed and then the outer cover.
That ought to lessen the weight some.

2. Will the crownwheel come out, without disturbing any preloads, etc.? That will definitely lessen the weight. Pinion will remain in the housing.

As such, 1 section in one box and 1 duffel bag, the other section in the other duffel bag.

Opinions / advice?

Thank you CS friends!
Happy New Year ... and may our cars stop rusting ;)

Alberto

I don't think you can disassemble the diff without having to go back and redo the pre-load.

I had one shipped to me in a single crate. You might try that.

Thank you Scott,

It costs around $340+ to El Salvador (customs headaches, etc.), and on the airplane....free :)
I am only removing the output flanges, open the housing, leave all bearings be,
take out the C.Wheel, and LSD. Pinion stays in original location.

Why would the preload change?

Thank you.
Best,
Alberto

The preload itself may not change, but the key element in the diff setup is the geometric relationship between the pinion and the crown wheel. If you move the crown wheel, then that relationship may change, and the result, without re-setting up the gears, may be excessive pinion and crown wear. I'm sure you can try it, and you may be lucky, but I'd want to at least double check the gear face engagement after disassembling and re-assembling it.

Scott, I am not moving the crown wheel, I am just taking it out of the case with the LSD attached.
The cover has no action on the shims, as it bottoms out, when going back on, as it is right now.

I will not unbolt it from the diff.
So, I do not see what will change by doing so.
The cones remain in the same locations, so nothing is disturbed.

I mean, if you want to check the friction plates for wear, you open and close, right?
And, no resetting of anything unless you replace bearings, right?

Thank you.
