Triple core radiator

Along with the drive shaft problem, I have noticed that the temp will climb while climbing hills/mountains. I have a new BMW radiator from 1985 or so. I really feel that it is time to replace and wanted to ask if anyone has used a triple core and does that have to be done custom?

I have a 3.5 Euro engine that was new in the crate when installed in 1985. Triple 40 side draft webers, ported and polished, 300 degree BMW cam, Stahl headers to name a few mods so running a bit hot is expected.

I have a stock radiator recored to triple row. Cost about $350 or so. Make sure they measure the depth of your current one so that the new one does not exceed that, causing clearance issues with the fan blades.

That along with the modern fan/clutch upgrade and mine does not go above 4pm on the gauge in the summer with the ac on.

I'm running a Bavaria (AC car) radiator, and it has not had a problem in Atlanta stop-n-go in August with a Motronic M30B35. Most of the triple core items I have seen have been custom installs using a local radiator shop. I have not seen any actual performance data from any radiator product information site, such as Tin vs Tout for a given pressure and lph. I would like to see such for the various radiator systems, like stock, aluminum, triple core brass, triple core aluminum, "tropical".

I had mine overdone size wise and have to resort to an electric fan (Spal Pusher type).

One thing I hadn't considered is how heavy this rad will be when filled with coolant. It already seems quite heavy and unwieldily when empty. I'd bet I added a few pounds more than I need. I think it will Look pretty clean though and I have a good feeling it will suck all the heat out of the engine it needs to. I don't like the sound of a mechanical fan anyway especially near Redline which I think an M30 should see regularly.

Amy, great seeing you at SharkFest.

I have a radiator that Mark Priesendorf, who inherited The Silicon Garage from the late Curt Ingraham, built for me. That thread is here:

It solved all of my E9's cooling issues. Unfortunately, I then sent Mark money for a 2002 radiator, and he went out of business, taking my money and others.

I found a local shop here in Boston who said they'd put a thin triple-core in the 2002 radiator for $380. So I second the comment that, if you want a thin triple-core, you should see what you can find locally.

As you probably know, there are I believe three different water pumps and three different fan and clutch combinations, resulting in three different clearance possibilities. I have the later-style (e.g. E24) setup with the water pump with the threaded nose and the later viscous fan with the collar nut that threads right onto the nose. It all works with ample clearance. I can't remember which combinations are the worst, clearance-wise; you'd have to search.

Given my options and considering my budget, I would go with spin on fan clutch with pump

11521723027U
Uro Parts
Fan Clutch
$44.52

11511720883
Graf
Water Pump; With Gasket; Metal Impeller
For models with screw-on (spin-on) fan clutch.
$46.34

Small pulley from e34 to clock the pump (1 706 781) 5 inches instead of 6 inches

1 719 175 fan blade

And a new aluminum radiator.....

About 400 bucks
