Trivia/help: What part is this?

Can anyone identify this part for me? I have it in a box of spare parts. It's a bit rusty in corners, particularly on the rear.

Is it possible it's an E9 radio/area console piece?

I believe that part is under the heater core and has bolting function to the base of heater and also console sides.
Not that I am an expert but do remember this piece during dash removal.
Others smarter than I will chime in!

I am thinking e3 as well. In the e9, with AC, there are two brackets under the radio and shifter console in my 72' and neither of them match the piece in the photo. Could this be a bracket for an e9 console without the AC stuff? Is your car all together and you are wondering what this "extra" part is for?

So, my console is basically disassembled. When I bought her the work needed to be done was described as "the center console needs sorting". This part was in a box. The AC was removed on my car, no idea when. Under the heater core may be a likely thought as Steve in Reno suggests, but i have no idea. I'm sending the car in April to a mechanic here to sort this the console out...and was hoping to give him a better idea if he can't ID it himself...
