Just wanted to inform you of the trunk wheel well cover available from MT. I just bought one and it is not of the original material and is of a formed foam. It also arrived cracked, and BMW will not take it back. Just wantd to inform those of you that may have considered ordering one.

Well there is a name from the past! Welcome Merdad!
Thanks, just bought a 71 2800CS and am in process of total rebuilt. It's been a while and I have to learn again, with the help of you guys.

Yes, I had a similar experience, it wasn't cracked but folded over. We ordered a second one and it came with the same deformation but BMW wouldn't take it back. I finally got it to conform OK

An update from BMW in response to my concern. It was very nice of them to follow up and address our issues.

Dear Mr. Vahid,

thank you for your message and my apologies for this inconvenience and disappointment.

We are trying to keep the parts as original as possible.
But regrettably, some production materials are not available or legally allowed anymore, like in this case.
Our supplier had to find a similar material, which has not been successful, in the past.

At the moment, we let these parts remanufacture, again. I am still waiting for a new sample.
The form will be the same as on the pictures. Only color and material will change.

But I am positive that the new one will be almost as similar as possible to the original one.

However, the availability of the new one has been planned for 2018, latest.

Kind regards,
Melanie Gieseke

Merdad, good to have you back.( Apologies for anything the Big Guy has done or will do.) Although that's about as useful as Melanie's song of woe about BMW's problems remanufacturing copies of parts like our Elephant Skin. I understand from a friend who bought the new stuff that some holes do not match up.

Will the cracks be "as similar as possible" to the originals? If you paid by credit card you may have some leverage.

Steve

Hi Steve, Thanks. I think we should let them know of any problems we find with new manufactured parts in order for them to improve rhem.

The cracks is on top layer of and not on the foam, and I did pay cash. At this point I have decided to buy most od the parts from W&N , CS WERKS and Stefen Ries since I have known them for years and know their parts are of good quality.

Regards

I ordered those covers probably 1.5 years ago and they sent that foam stuff for one side and the original for the other.
Everyone was like, what is this stuff?
They did take them back.

For all the '74 owners out there, we have those structural supports between the wheel well and the back panel which means our skins are different than earlier years. Will BMW make skins for us? (That's a rhetorical question.....)

Bill, you doubt BMW's commitment to its classic heritage? (Another rhetorical question...)

the best bet for anybody with USA '74 models is to either find good ones to buy ... or somebody who has a pair of good ones to make a mold and put them into production. with 844 coupes from that era ... there is probably not enough demand to make this feasible.
