trunk torsion rods

Turns out that, after only 44 years, the torsion rods that should hold my trunk lid open -- really don't. They work OK with an empty toolbox. With tools installed (as happened to me last week at a show), the weight overwhelms the torsion bars and the trunk lid falls (spilling all the tools, of course).

I've found nothing here in past threads about correcting this, short of using a prop rod if you have a wing or spoiler. I suppose I could bend the "L" ends away from the surface but that seems sort of non-German -- not to mention that I'd almost certainly scratch the paint in the process. What am I missing? Thanks.

Have you tried adjusting the bump stops on each side by moving them back a little? This allows the lid to raise up a little bit more and may allow it to hold open on it's own.

I found that mine were adjusted too much and I had to pull the arms down each time in order to close my lid without tweaking the lid and arms. After I adjusted the bump stops it holds open and closes easily without me pull down on the arms.

Adjusting the stops for the hinges did not make an appreciable difference for me (they were almost at vertical already). I just went with a low-tech solution. Got a couple lengths of 5/16ths steel rod, cut to length, put a rubber cap on each end, and propped them from the hinge to the trunk floor. Works fine for the rare occasions I will need them.
