The other day I removed the vinyl wheel arch covers in the trunk
The backing foam has turned to dust
Has anyone replaced this foam and if so how did you go about it?
Thanks

You can buy thin open or closed cell foam, auto upholstery shops or craft stores. I used it only where there were indentations so it wouldn't crack. Put strong tape on the backside of any existing cracks to hold them in place.

maybe the foam at an upholstery shop would be more durable
I have an old motorcycle seat, most of it feels fine, except where the cover was torn, there the foam turned to dust

what are the pros and cons of covering the entire thing? maybe the foam would make it more susceptible to damage, if something contacted it, it would have give before the metal stopped it

The thin foam does almost nothing but if used cover everything. If using thicker closed cell foam you can cover indentations or the whole thing, it's up to you depending on how much room you have. That is why I only glued it onto indentations.
