Trunk Lid wont stay up... How do you tighten the Torsion Rods?

The trunk lid keeps falling down... It trys to stay but falls after a minute or so... Broke a nice tool box when the trunk fell and hit my hard head!

What is the best way to tighten the torsion rods?

hi, as to the torsion rods mentioned, i did dismount and mount again without problems, but you have to be very careful, cos they are strong springs due to the torsional effect

first try to understand the mechanism, i can assume that if you are facing a wrong installation you can not tell if it is right or wrong immediately, check the pics to see if you can tell any difference

not very detailed but you can see it in post number 11, follow this link

the two rods, right and left are different they should make the spring torsional effect when assembled in the correct way

If and when the springs are all set up properly---- when you fully open the trunk lid, the two support bars on the side need to "Click" forward into an "over center position" and come to rest against the two adjustable triangle shaped stops.
If these bars don't go over center by just a little bit, the trunk lid will never stay up fully.
The springs only just take the weight of the trunk lid so that it becomes very light to lift.

When you are adjusting the triangle shaped stops, you only just want these bars to go over center a fraction, if they go to much they wont "pop" back into position easily (or at all) and will prevent the trunk lid closing.

Good luck

Bars are crossed but spacers are missing

Bars are crossed but spacers are missing... I will find some and try them..

Stupid question but...

You don't have a duckbill spoiler on that car do you? If so you will need a stick to keep it open.

Just like other components on this car the Torque Rod BACKWARDS!

The saga continues with the "Great Pumkin"!

We tried everything to make the trunk lid stay up... Then we looked at another E9... Guess what we found?

Along with the fact that ALL (8) of the rubber spacers are missing from the Torque Rods just like with the steering wheel the Torque Rods were installed backwards!

We then removed everything from the trunk lid and reinstalled it all correctly and the trunk lid now stays open!

Just one more defect of around 50 that is now corrected...
