Turn indicator stalk

I noticed the stalk is on the right side of the steering column. How weird is that? I can't see any reason why it can't just be put on the correct side though, other than the "wash" and "wipe" text ending up upside-down. The mounting is entirely symmetrical. Is that a thing that people do?
