73 CS. I have a BMW steering wheel but I don't believe it was the one original to the car. (How does one attach pictures to a post here?) I am not sure which model it is off of but the black plastic turn signal canceling prong that is attached under the horn contact ring on the back of the steering wheel is not long enough to engage the cancelling device. (Yes, the steering wheel is fully seated.) I looked at what I believe to be the original steering wheel that I have in storage and there is nothing at all on the back of it. Perhaps what is on the back of the wheel installed came from that one.

Any solutions? Does anyone know what this steering wheel was from?

Looks like I can upload a file.

That is not the original wheel. There should be a loose metal ring with a tab that slips over the splines just next to the cancelling lever, held in place by the wheel. Sorry I don't have a pic.

Let me also offer Stan as the expert to give you a second opinion on that steering wheel :).

Ah yes, I recall a picture of that sleeve. Do you believe the prong on this wheel would engage the sleeve if I had the sleeve?

Ahhha! Tab is on left side of wheel, you need it on the right. Can it be rotated after removing the horn contact screws?

No, it need two more mods: 1. You need to disassemble plastic horn ring housing and put brass ring on opposite side of black plastic (otherwise there will no contact with horn button) when you change sides. 2. On one side of aluminium part of the hub there is a typical locking cut inside, so plastic housing of horn contact wasn't slipped in circle (you will see it when take off black plastic); so you will need to cut a new same looking cut and put plastic opposite side.

and possibly you have the turn signal screwed into the "front" of the metal it attaches to, rather than the "back"? I need to get into my turn signals too, they don't stay on when pushed and so on. All the joys of old cars are visited on us...

Thats an early 6 series wheel. Should work on an e9. Did it work at any time?
The canceling function has never worked with this wheel on it. D
They only mount on the side facing driver which he has.
I'm beginning to get confused. Is the wheel I have from a 6 series? Is there anything I can do to make the canceling function work? (I'm guessing that the cancelling function was different on the car for which my wheel was designed.)

Your coupe has turn on the right, 74 and later it is on the left. Yes that is a six series wheel. Wladek showed you how to modify it to work.

I meant this cuts. Photos are of the same OEM hub, but custom rebuild. View attachment 28522 View attachment 28523
HB Chris says you have told me what I need to do to solve the issue. I must be pretty dense, because I still don't know. Here is a picture of the back of the Series 6 wheel with the horn contact removed. It does not have the "cut" or "groove" that you showed. I'm wondering if having this wheel just plain and simple makes it impossible to have the canceling function work. Or will it work if I get a sleeve that slides over the steering shaft?
