Turn signal/Flasher relay testing?

The first thing to check is always the fuses. My flasher relay recently went and it was the little contact plate from the internal low current relay which broke. I bypassed it with a standard box relay because I wasn't patient enough to find a new relay.

Almost all of the flasher relay signals route through the hazard switch so it is also another place to look for problems. Does the hazard flasher function? It used the same relay.

I don't think there is a simple test; this relay is rather complex. It has a timer circuit with a few real transistors (pretty advanced for the time) to make the flash rate independent of the load.

On the relay the schematics are very unclear (I have two different sets). From what I can tell the main current path is between pins C and 49. 49 appears to be the main power feed; C appears to be completed to 49 to send power to the indicators. pin 31 appears to be a ground to cause the timer to run but is is always grounded. Pin 49a appears to enable the entire relay (when grounded). So, I would suggest putting a meter on pin 49a and watching what happens with the ignition is turned on and then the flashers are turned on.

If the hazard lights work that exonerates the relay, and makes the
hazard light switch a suspect. The turn signals use a different fuse
than the hazard lights, and the hazard light switch can fail to
pass voltage to the trun signals while still working for hazard lights.

The best test is to check for voltage at the relay when the hazard
switch is not depressed. No voltage means fuse or hazard switch
are bad.

The other possibility is the turn signal stalk.

The turn signal stalk will more than likely fail on the left or the right but not both.

This weekend i replaced my turn signal relay with a new one. I do still have the one I took out (massively modified but working well). I'll be happy to send it to you if you want to try swapping it. PM with address if interested.

Thanks for the offer. I'm lucky to have one of the essex <-- Spelling? brothers (Shanon) as a neighbor... Well Ex neighbor now but still close by. And he set me up with some spares to test stuff out.

Right now I have no flashers or turn signals. Fuses all look good. I dont want to try swapping stuff until I find out why it smoked in the 1st place.

Let me ask this: If the wires were put on the rear window heater switch wrong could that cause it to short out when turned on?

Looking at the the switch Shanon let me borrow (wires cut off but still on) I would say mine were not correct.

YES! Please see my other post recent post on this. The BROWN ground wire must be on the center pin; the other wires can go to any other pins.
