Turn signal/high beam issues

My turn signals do not self-cancel on my '74 CS. Was told there is a disk in the steering column that makes that happen, but it hasn't bothered me enough to fix. But now I've added the issue of the turn signal lever (left side on the '74) not holding place when engaged, forcing me to hold it in place when signaling. In addition, if the headlights are on, using the lever sometimes causes the high beams to flash erratically, which is annoying to all. W&N still carries the replacement stalk for this model, and I will buy one, but wonder if both problems could be in the lever, or if I still need the disk.

Dohn -- I had both of these problems when I incorrectly installed the cancellation ring Chris referenced. The picture wilies13 has posted shows the correct orientation of the ring. Alternatively, your problems may arise from the screws in that picture becoming loose because this would change the gap "A" in the picture.

I suggest you look into the orientation of the ring and the "A" gap before buying a new part. You need to do the ring orientation and "A" gap adjustment if you buy a new part, so if adjustments to your existing parts do not work you could view this adjustment process as practice for installing a replacement.

And on Dohn’s 74 the ring faces left.

Yes, I can see where my post may have been confusing. The picture shows the correct orientation of the ring only in the sense that it shows the ring installed so that it is pointing toward the stalk. The picture illustrates an earlier coupe with the stalk on the right, so the ring points to the right. On later cars like Dohn's, the stalk is on the left, so the ring would point to the left.

Thanks to all. I think I can mentally flip the image; most of my thinking goes that way anyway...

And if it turns out you need a replacement stalk, I think I have one laying around here.
