Last week under the 'car parts' section on CL, I found an ad for a 'two door Bavaria-all or parts'. The pictures were terrible; one showing the wrecked front end covered in snow and one showing the wrecked interior. I knocked over my coffee reaching for the phone.

My buddy Sean(owns a beautiful '72 2002-better than new) and I were the first to get to it. It was in the middle of a storage/wrecking yard and was surround by cars well past their prime. We quickly confirmed that it was a CSI and it was full of great parts. Windshield, back glass, trunk lid, dash, etc... all looked good. I offed the owner $500.00 for it; he told me he had been offered double that amount over the phone and three different parties were coming to look at it later that day. Apparently, these 'would be' buyers were giving this guy a quick education on the E9. He now was getting an idea of what he had; going from calling a Bavaria to informing us that the CSI had more horsepower that the CS. Thanks for that! He and I ended up striking a deal under the 'phoned in offer' for the car. When Sean and I returned with my cash, there were two other people looking at the car-waiting to see if we would come back.

I really bought the car for the parts, possibly turning my coupe into a CSI. After getting a better look at it and confirming that it has a clean title, I'm not so sure. Maybe this car is worth saving. It's shock towers look great and the body (A pillars back) is really strait, and it's all there. This car still has current tags and was running and driving a little over a year ago. It might have been a decent car before it was hit.

It's covered in gunk. This weekend; I'm going clean it up, pull the carpet, and get it into the garage.

So what do you guys think? Save it or part it?

Thanks,
Vince

Nice find! I remember seeing that CR ad posted on the E28 board. When I looked at the seller's pictures I thought "parts car," but looking at your photos it might (might) be a keeper. Is that a crack-free dash? The interior doesn't look too bad, and I can't see any fender bubbles, but it's hard to tell in those leetle pictures. What do the floors look like under the carpets? The story under the rocker covers will be a determining factor. Hard to see the inner/outer fender seam -- what's that stuff covering them?

Wow, what a score. Not much wrong for the looks. Gimmee a hammer and we can drive! My current bid is......never mind... well... EZ too fixx

Another vote to save it! Of course, I'm spending your money to do it.

As others have written, it would depend on how much hidden rust there is - rust not visible from the PhotoBucket pictures. Also on the car's mechanical condition, though it looks like it might have been someone's baby before the accident.

If the rust isn't too bad and the suspension and drivetrain are OK, it looks like your biggest expense will be a new hood, grille, front beltline trim and possibly a front bumper (or run bumperless). What about the radiator? - it looks like that might have survived the accident.

My point is that this looks like it MIGHT become a driver again without a huge investment. Too bad a few things seem to have gotten parted out (like the door interior panels and clock) before you nabbed it.

I sure am curious. Your original offer $500 before the bone yard guy got wise. Loose lips sink...whatever. 2 door Bavaria indeed. What was the winning number if I could be so bold to ask?

Pamp-

After I offered $500,he told me about the offer he had recieved over the phone. Apparently, the guy really wanted the car and was coming from the coast. Because of the crazy weather we've had there have been all kinds of road closures due to landslides. The guy was going to try to get here as soon as possible and said he would give the owner a grand for it.
Who knows if it was true. I bumped my offer up to $800 cash, we settled on $900. He even put in on his flatbed and delivered it to my house- 20 miles away. The guys that were looking at it when we came back with the cash might have clued him in the most. That's when he started to say words like'fuel injection' and 'grey market', but the deal was already done.

When I visited DMV to transfer everything over and found out the title was clean- not salvaged, that when I really got excited.

We live in West Linn, OR. Just a few miles south of Portland.

I did a little digging on the car today but wimped out because it was freezing out. Bubbles for sure on the front fenders and a couple on the drivers door. From what I could see on the underside, drivers side looked pretty good but there is visable corrosion on the passenger floor board. Rocker panel covers are in great shape- I have seen these covers rusted before on other coupes. We'll have to wait to see what's underneath. Inner/outer fender seams look good (Pamp-the covering you asked about was some rubber vgroove strips that easlily pulled off) but there is definitely some filler in the front passenger fender. Dash has two cracks behind the pod cover. I had to look for them. The console overall looks good, the side pieces are in great shape. The dash/console are much nicer on this car than when I first got my coupe. My CS came from AZ, the body was dry and in great shape but everything else was fried from the sun.
