i just spent 18 hours in my new coupe driving from LA to Seattle (great trip), and i gotta say, my back started moaning after about an hour. that lower bar in the seat back hits my aging back in just the wrong place, and there is very little padding between it and the outer leather. same for all of you guys? or should there either be more padding around that bar or more lumbar support so your back does not make such direct contact with the bar.

thnks,
alanmcg

ps - i know material things are not supposed to bring us joy, but MAN i get a big smile on my face when open my garage door now. :)

I hear ya - my freestanding garage is viewable from the kitchen french doors so I leave the garage open so I can look at my coupe anytime - they are art masterpieces!

Congrat's on your coupe and sorry about your pain...

I spent 3 weeks driving my coupe a couple thousand km's and hours a day when I first bought it in Deutschland before shipping to the States. I had no pain from the seat.

However, now 30 years later, I have usual low back pain but the seat only has a few thousand more km's on it and the seat is still comfortable but has a rip on the seat bottom thigh portion probably from a key or Levi copper rivet dragging. It is leather not the other materials...maybe when they use leather they had different padding...but maybe not...on my '79 928 the leather seat's padding is degraded and I need lumbar support (a nice pillow).

I plan on recovering the seats and adding an adjustable lumbar device within...I just have to find it when it is time...

A friend with a lovely CSi picked up a mesh lumbar support in a $$ Store. It works.

I use the poor person's ac in my coupe: a coolseat, that black "mesh" over a layer of springs. It helps.

beautiful remark

you realise it IS a work of art !

congratulations

I could not agree more...ART it is...(IIRC) Harmann Karmann and Enzo Ferrari both went to design school together...outcomes include the Coupe by Karmann and the Dino by Enzo both cars that are Art on wheels!

WOW 18 hour trip..sounds great !
Were you pleased with the way the coupe performed ?
I had my seats redone and I got to say they are very very comfy and smell nice too !
Congrats on your new coupe.

very pleased

yes, very pleased with how coupe performed - 14 hr first day, 80-85mph the whole way (radar detector on), car ran flawlessly - thnks to peter (coupeking) and carl (3.5 and motronic).
sort of funny, i had a whole ipod full of music that i thought i would listen to - never turned it on - was happy just listening to the coupe.

Wow. The back rest is fine in mine but I have never done more than a couple of hours.
If had to do 18 hours I would take a Leonard Cohen CD and listen to it 18 times. Leonard Cohen can be period correct for the coupe...

Lonnnggg ride home

And years ago I toured for days at a time exploring the Western US, several parcels of Western Canada, National Parks, Blue roads and as many mountain passes we could find--several hundred miles per day was typical.

And in all that time I was listening to the "Music of Munich"--the sound of Bavarian Music coming from our M-30--sometimes even at full song.

Last week BLUMAX made its 36th anniversary trip to Monterey and for the first time most of the trip to, around locally and return was in the passenger seat as my older Son Dave was my chauffuer--a first for this old Sailor.

CORRECTION: To set the record straight--Mike in his exuberance about his Batmobile being so unique had stated that BLUMAX had 500,000 miles--that is an overstatement--it is "only" 416,000 and change.

Arde,

Leonard would be period correct but how many times can you listen to .."oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone?"

:)

Are the foam or rubberized horsehair cushions still available :confused::confused: to rebuild the seats in these cars ? I never had a coupe seat apart but I have rebuilt dozens of V.W. seats and they weren’t that bad of a job. Some times the seat frames have cracks you have to weld or braze or even reinforce but still no big deal :-D. ~ John Buchtenkirch

I recently drove from Las Vegas to Seattle in a 3.0CS recently and experienced no pain at all, other than a little right leg soreness the next day from the lack of cruise control. 15 hour trip, enjoyed every minute!

The car had the original seat cushions. For reference, I am 6'5" and weigh about 190lbs. A newly redone set with new cushioning should resolve your issue.

I can listen to " I tried to leave you", "Gipsy Wife" and a few others forever, and its gets better just like the coupe or Carlos Gardel. My wife thinks it is depressing but then again she doesn't appreciate driving the coupe either.
