Hi All.

i need some help and advice please...

My E9 was involved in a car accident 3 weeks ago, not my fault. my car was hit in the rear ie quarters, petrol tank, boot floor, bumper, bootlid, lights all damaged.

bodyshop manager, told me, 2 weeks ago, that my car is a total loss.
i got a phone call from my insurance company, the engineer telling me, it is 50/50 if they are going to write my car off or repair it. to repair it, it will cost about 11k, if all the parts are available new from BMW main dealer.

If my car is repaired and if i decide to sell my e9 in the near future, and the new buyer has my car inspected by a specialist before purchase, will the repairs done, show up on the report.

has my car been de-valued because of the accident, even if all repairs are done to the highest standard?.

once some thing is damaged/broken, it is never the same again?. My car has never been involved in any accident since it left the factory, in 1972.

i will only have the car back, after all the repairs have been done, if no-one can tell it has never been hit from the back?.

My pride and joy looks like a missile has hit it from behind.

Do i tell my insurance company ie repair the car, only if no-one can tell it has been involved in a serious accident, after all repairs have been done or write it off and i will go and purchase another E9, within 7 days.

Thxs for all your help sandhu

Hey Sandhu,

Sorry to hear about that. I guess if you are attached to this specific car have it fixed rather than going and buying another one which could have problems which show up later.

In your position I would have my car fixed but by someone who reallyu knew what they were doing and make sure the car ends up better than before the shunt. This means taking it to a specialist and not a BMW dealer.

As for re-sale - I would not be put off as long as there were pictures to show the damage so I could see it wasn't repaired when it shouldn't have been etc.

Regards,

Rohan

I just went thru the insurance thing for an e9 I had. As the car owner you have choices.

No matter what - you have the right to decide who does the work.

The insurance co may look at it as a total loss, but if it is questionable then it will becomes a negociation. It can go 2 ways. Worse case is that as a total loss (you get a check for the value, again negociated and have the right to keep that car as a salvage) the second is you argue your case and take it to a known specialist that can fix the car. The insurance company pays the bill.

Depending on the damage - I can't say which is better in your case. The remaining question becomes how the isurance co reports the accident and who has visibility to it. As this might have an impact to value.

What ever you do, get the car back home, and in the garage right away. or tow it to a trust shop/ specialist. There are way TOO MANY valueable parts on these cars that will go missing if it sits while the insurance co decide what to do..

Sandhu,

Sorry to hear of your accident. Stay positive - use this time to have any niggly bits put right. Sounds like your baby can be fixed - if you want it fixed.

I agree with Rohan, I would want to fix my car if it was possible. I would not be thinking of the re-sale / move it on value, because I would be wanting it put back to better than new condition to keep it for me. I would also want my car repaired to such a good standard so that it did not look like it had ever been hit in the rear.

Have it done right by a BMW specialist, rather than a BMW dealer. Even though it is painful, take lots of photos now, and if you can during, then immediately after the rebuild. Keep the documentation relating to the accident, and subsequent repair.

My tuppence worth!

Thxs for all your help and advice, i have decided a specialist will repair my car, if the insurance company gives me the all clear. down side to the repair is that it will take 3/4 months to complete all the repairs, by then the summer will be nearly over, so not much driving in the CSL, this year for me, i am missing out on alot of fun in the car.

Thxs again lads for all your help.

Hi Sandhu,

not sure what the current set up is but as far as I know ML used to get bodywork done eslewhere and act as a sort of agent. Might have changed but if thats the case then I would cut out the middle man myself as the garage will receive the money for the job.

Hi Sandhu - and my sincere commiserations - I have just had exactly the same experience with my e9 4 weeks ago - shunted up the Harris !! My damage amounted to $18K AUS. Touch and go whether it was to be called a write off or could be repaired with new panels. Insurance co agreed to repair - too much invested/attachment to the car and if I was to buy again what would I inherit.
Have tried to turn the ugly incident into a positive and had the panel beater do some extras around rust proofing while panels are off, plus other tidy up work - looking forward to getting the old girl back with a nice nip and tuck and taking her out on the town.
Glad to see you elected to repair - be patient - stressed panel beaters lead to rushed jobs and results you won't be happy with.

Hi Matthew - Bill at Ajay Panels & Mechanicals is repairing my car - the business has a wealth of information, spare parts and panels specifically for E9's but attend to others cars as well of course. In the interests of openness Bill has become a good friend since I have owned and slowly restored my E9 but regardless I recommend the business - they are knowledgeable, honest, low key and approachable. Can give you contacts via a PM if you require.
