Does anyone ever look at the users and guests currently viewing that appears at the bottom of the Forums page? Now I know why Dan has his hands full trying to prevent spammers. A new member below?

what is the point of difference between a member and an active member - a period of inactivity if so how long?
 
Active simply means you are logged on and viewing something in the Forums, click on Currently Active Users. Guests are not registered and admitted as members. I see many weird user names that never show up in the member list but that line shows them as a new member, at least for a short period before they are weeded out I think.

Members: 3,225, Active Members: 1,522
