Just after I posted a question looking for tips on installing new vent window gaskets the site went down to transistion to the new format.

I recieved the following response from TJ offline and though I would share with the group and see if anyone else has words of wisdom

From TJ:
First of all, you must be very careful in removing the vent windows. This is the first tricky part. The bolt that holds them in at the bottom is a 13mm head and is very hard to get to. It must come all the way out, you'll drop it in the bottom of the door if you're lucky. If you're like me, you'll drop it somewhere inside the door about half way down.

Then you get to try to remove the window, which first must be pressed DOWN to get the pivot pin to come out. Then you can pull up gently, but with force. You need to be careful as the bottom pin (that the bolt goes through) is kind of fragile.

Then you get to experience the joy of installing the new rubber, which is also challenging. Use lots of the warming lube upon installation."

I never use my vent windows anymore, now that I've seen how fragile that bottom post is, and you have to really crank down on the window to get it to seal with the new rubber. I've never been a big fan of vent windows anyway, they make too much noise for my taste.

Good luck,

Words of wisdom? You want words of wisdom?

Buy low, sell high.

"Man who keep feet firmly on ground have trouble putting on pants".

That job is NFF Kurt. Here's some more words for you.............."don't start it Friday night at 7PM if you plan on coming to the show on Saturday".

Finally, in all seriousnessosity............I neglected to mention that in order to get to the 13mm nut the vent window needs to be opened about half way through it's travel if memory serves. This way you can get to it and once you've loosened it you'll be able to drop it nicely in to the hardest part of the door from which to retrieve it. = )

Vent window seals

Replacement is not brain surgery--even I managed to do it carefully and with use of rubber lube or small amount of liquid soap or final detail--no big deal!! I fail to see the issue or logic that TJ raises as to use of vent windows--they are GREAT--and for over 34 years and 400K miles no problem with the two in the BLUMAX. Seals replaced 15 years ago--regularly opened to clean all surfaces of the vent window surround and treat the seals about every 3-4 months with a quality rubber protectant.

Remember this fact as to automotive mechanisms--or for any other mechanical systems that are designed for use/exercise and that remain dormant--"any equipment that goes unused will in time become useless or in need of repair"

Open them often and prevent the buffeting of having only the side windows open. As a matter of choice I have toured thousands of miles in the BLUMAX with all windows and sunroof open to enjoy the great outdoors of this great land at somewhat illegal speeds. JMT

One of my vent windows hits the main frame at the top when being closed. Turning the know will force it to "climb over" the main (large) frame before sliding into the slot surrounded by the triangular rubber seal.
Is the solution here to adjust the forward/backward position of the vent window mechanism to the door?? If I remember right there are not 2 round holes, but an extended opening allowing for forward/backward adjustment. May be I´m wrong here.
Just thought that I would ask before taking off the door panels and opening the plastic protection once again.
