I have toyed with the idea of selling my 72 3.0CS non-sunroof coupe for the last year or two. VIN 2240270. I have been in the process of thoroughly refurbishing (not totally restoring) my coupe since I bought it about 4 years ago.
Even though my coupe spent most all of it's life in So. Cal., I bought the car in my home town of Kirkland, WA. This is my third coupe and have owned have been into older European cars my entire adult life. As we all know, corrosion is our biggest enemy with these coupes. This is a very, very, low corrosion coupe. My car didn't run when I bought it. It had a quality paint job approx. 25 yrs.ago in the original Malaga and it is still in too nice of shape to strip and re-paint.When my coupe returned from Bimmer's Only (see below), everything was removed from the outside of the car and the 25 year old paint was wet sanded and polished. Bumpers where re-chromed and re-mounted. Belt trim re-installed, etc. It looks fantastic. Original paint in engine compartment and in fantastic condition including shock mounts.
My non-sunroof coupe was trailered to Bimmer's Only in Tulalip, WA (vintage BMW expert) and has had a total mechanical overhaul including;
-complete rebuild of original engine. Blueprinted and balanced. Only about 3000 miles since rebuild completed.
-new Webers
-Getrag 265 5-speed (was 4-speed)
-new clutch of course
-new, complete factory exhaust system with new stainless steel header and tailpipe from Sven in Bellevue (sorry Sven, I should have asked to use your name) beautiful tailpipe though! Completes the back of the car!
-completely new brake system
-suspension and subframe rebuild
-A/C was removed, but all parts are boxed and in storage.
-new Bilstein's all around , and new LaJolla Indep. Lowering springs. (rear end still a bit too high)
-rear shock mounts were fatigued and cracking, so they were repaired and strengthened.
-restored BBS RS 16x7 and16x8 wheels are mounted. Also, full set of original wheels in great condition with newer tires.
-new set of Pirelli P7 tires on BBS rims.
The interior was stripped from the car, pans were inspected, and about a 6" area around the base of the accelerator was professionally cut out and replaced.
-new dash from 'Just Dashes' has been installed along with new wood from 'Bela' which has been re-installed
-new BMW brand windshield and glazing
-tan leather seats are currently, and professionally being rebuilt and recovered with GAHH interior kit.
-Gauges cleaned by N. Hollywood Speedo. (didn't need restoration) and clock converted to Quartz
-door panels are being refurbished in original manner (kick panels recovered below lower stainless trim)
-tan GAHH carpets are new and in the box.
-beautiful Petri (40) steering wheel
-original Becker Europa radio
-I will continue to finish the interior when weather warms up again.
The only thing to finish on the car putting the remaining (easiest) parts of the interior back together (new dash is in). If I were buying a coupe, if I could, I would want to see it with carpets out, lower dash doors removed and door cards off. You can really inspect the car a lot more simply and thoroughly. I'm not in any hurry to sell this car and of course would encourage (demand) a comprehensive, thorough PPI by someone that really knows these cars.
Not only do I have receipts for all work accomplished since I have owned the car, I believe that I have every receipt for this cars since the car was new. I keep the car in heated storage over the Winter months and will take comprehensive photos once there is a break in the cold and wet weather. If you're in the Northwest, I encourage you to come and study the car, receipts, and every aspect of a purchase like this. I just have way too many projects and am trying to lighten my load.
$46K OBO
When you see the low rust condition of the car and start adding up money spent, this is an extremely fair price for my coupe.
