I happened to see a post on Bimmerfest that someone just bought a `69 2800CS 4 speed, VIN 2270003. I suggested he join here so let's see if he follows through. I was intrigued because it is the earlist U.S. coupe VIN that I have seen. The earliest build date so far is 9/1/69 and 2280006 is the earliest automatic in the registry.

Cool. There are a few of those early 227 cars here, mine is 2270012.

Actually, I'm in the middle of two other cars in the registry, 11 and 13...I wonder how many sequential cars we have like that? Murray's car is 16.

Maybe the early 2800's were rustproofed and that's why they're still here? :)

Looking at U.S. coupes only we have:

24 pairs of coupes who are one digit apart (48 coupes)
3 groups of coupes who are three numbers in a row (9 coupes); 2240671/2/3, 2250402/3/4, 2270012/3/4

Lots of others very close together as well and some with the same build date of course. You can sort by VIN in the registry but it doesn't include the Seen in Other, that is a separate sort.

2200658

This is my father´s old car. It was built on Jan 23rd, 1969.
I have asked BMW about the high number, as BMW could by no means have built 657 coupes in Dec 68- mid Jan 69 with holidays, start of production with all its issues etc.
But they cannot come up with a plausible answer.
